Part of Solution Nursery and Primary School
Humanity Effect funds the Part of Solution Nursery and Primary School. Our school is built on stilts in the water slum of Makoko in Lagos, Nigeria. We currently have an enrollment of over 400 students, who are taught by our 10 teachers. We have adopted an American curriculum. Our students are taught English, mathematics, science, economics, and numerous other subjects. In December 2023, we placed second out of 52 schools in an academic competition on the mainland.
As a result of our donors' generosity, we have been able to provide uniforms, shoes, backpacks, books, and more to our students. We also pay all of our teachers' salaries, and we consistently support the local economy by using Makoko-based vendors for our clothes and school supplies purchases. Other projects we've done include building our very own school boat, providing electricity to the school, and drilling a bore hole with a water tank in the playground.
30 of our students are orphans. Prior to Humanity Effect, they had no beds to call their own. Humanity Effect furnished a room connected to our school with 30 bed frames, mattresses, pillows, and blankets. The furnishing process was done entirely through local carpenters and laborers. Our school is, quite literally, home to these students.
Given that less than 20% of children in Makoko go to school, and that the Part of Solution Nursery and Primary School is at capacity, we decided to build a second school. In January 2024, we contracted a local construction company to build our new school. It's estimated that the new school will be operational by September for the start of the next school year.
With no government funding, Humanity Effect relies entirely on donations for operating the Part of Solution Nursery and Primary School, funding our orphanage, and building our second school. None of our non-Nigeria based team is paid a salary. We're all volunteers who aspire to make a difference in the world. We want to ensure that your donations do as much good as possible, as they are the only thing keeping us alive.
Travelers in Nigeria are consistently welcomed to our school, many of whom have become long-term supporters of Humanity Effect. In addition to financial support, we are always looking for volunteers to join our team. If you're interested in visiting or joining our team, please contact us.
